Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money youll earn later. The idea that popularity could have a serious impact on ones earning potential shouldnt come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work. “If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations, ” said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you occasionally feel depressed, ”said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary”. Maybe thats why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism (交友狂癥). A woman even complained that the networking website Facebooks 5, 000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts. But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency? “Call me uncool, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition (定義) of friend, ”said Meghan Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US. 56. Sources suggest there are 300 million snooker players there, which is more than the rest of the world put together. So its not surprised that some of the worlds best players come from China. They have been showing their talent at the World Snooker Championship, which takes place every year here in the UK at the Crucible Theatre in the northern English city of Sheffield. The World Snooker Championship is the most important event in professional snooker in terms of prize money, reputation and world ranking points. This year four of the participants for World Snooker Championship were ChineseMarco Fu, Liu Chuang, Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo. Liu Chuang and Liang Wenbo are making their debut in Sheffield this year, in fact. However, only one of those players, Liang Wenbo, has made it to the final eight. Wenbo is currently officially ranked 53 in the world. His best performance to date was when he reached the last 32 in the 2006 Welsh Open, so to get through to the final eight in the World Championship is quite an achievement. He may go even further. The left-handed snooker professional comes from Heilongjiang and it is hoped he will follow the success of his fellow countryman(老鄉(xiāng)) Ding Junhui. Wenbo is the first Chinese player to ever reach the quarter finals of the Championship and he just sneaked (潛行) through after an extremely tough second round game against Northern Irelands Joe Swail. After a long and attracting battle, Wenbo finally won 13-12 and he now faces twice World Champion Ronnie OSullivan. This promises to be another difficult game for the Chinese rising star as OSullivan reached the last eight with an amazing maximum break of 147. OSullivan would have picked up 157, 000 (more than 2 million RMB) prize money but another player, Englands Ali Carter, has now matched his achievement in the same tournament. OSullivan will have to share the money with Carter. 60. Who has got the highest record at the World Snooker Championship so far according to the text? A. Ding Junhui. B. Liang Wenbo. C. Marco Fu. D. Liu Chuang. 61. Which of the following statements is true? A. Liang Wenbo got into the Semi-final this time. B. OSullivan has won 157, 000 prize at that World Snooker Championship. C. China perhaps has the largest number of snooker players around the world at present. D. Left-handed players have advantages over right-handed players in sports. 62. Which column of a newspaper can this passage be taken from? A. News report. B. Entertainment and sport. C. Character introduction. D. Business. 63. What can we infer from the passage? A. So far this is the best performance of Liang Wenbo. B. Liang Wenbo plays better than other players in China. C. All players around the world pay much attention to the World Snooker Championship. D. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealers showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young mans name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, “With all your money you give me a Bible? ” He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his fathers house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his fathers important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealers name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words. “PAID IN FULL”. How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. Sometimes we dont realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect “the packaging” to be different. What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened. 64. According to the passage we can infer that _. When the technology becomes commercially available, it could help lead-footed drivers avoid tickets and also save lives. The company that developed the product hopes to convince Australian government agencies to put the technology into use in their automobile fleets. The product, called Speed Alert, links real-time location data and speed obtained with the help of GPS to a database of posted speed limits stored in a drivers PDA or programmable mobile phone. The setup of the product does not need to be hooked up to a cars speedometer. In fact, it is entirely portable. It will also work with newer phones and PDAs that have built-in GPS receivers. If a driver exceeds the speed limit, the speed is shown and an alert sounds. Michael Paine, an Australian vehicle design engineer and traffic safety consultant, was hired to analyze the product. He told Live Science that his colleagues in the road safety field are “very enthusiastic” about what theyre now calling “intelligent speed alert”. Other research, according to Paine, shows that 40 percent of all traffic deaths involve speeding. There is also a potentially controversial future use: “Since the system is so portable, it would be easy to make it a requirement for teenage drivers to always use a speed alert device when driving, ” Paine said, “The system even has the capability to record speeding violations, so parents can monitor their teenage drivers. ”The product will soon go on sale in Sydney. 68. Whats the purpose of the new product? A. To inform us of the new car system. B. To introduce some improvement in cars. C. To limit certain drivers to safe driving. D. To popularize the built-in car system. 69. The second paragraph mainly talks about _.
