I went to a very small village school, about 30 kids in total. One lunchtime we were all in the dining hall when a man came in to deliver and set up the schools first computer, I went over and didn't leave this mans side for the rest of the day. Fortunately my dad is an electrical engineer , so shortly afterwards he bought a ZX81 and a few ears later a commodore 64.Unfortunately at high school, they only had 2 computers for use by about 600 students, so I had to focus on what I could do at home peeking and poking my way through the commodore 64 user manual. From the Commodore 64, we upgraded to the Amiga which was an amazing machine but by then the bullying had set in at school and being remotely geeky was not cool. As a result, I strayed away from computers, almost hiding my interest in them like some dirty secret. At home we moved up to an Opus 286 with 1meg of ram and one of the first VGA screens. I learnt about databases using Base IV and some basic Fortran. As I moved through the educational system I deliberately avoided computer subjects as options for study for fear of being seen as a geek and being bullied as a result. That is until my second attempt at A Levels where I met Bill Edwards, one of the greatest teachers I have ever met. He would stray miles beyond the curriculum if he thought you were interested, and luckily my class was filled with students that were very very interested. Now, I am one of the fortunates that genuinely loves his work, as I sit here it is I am, I have just finished setting up an esx server for no other reason than I haven't done it before and wanted to see what it was all about.I have a two week holiday coming up and I intend to spend part of that time learning about Mono. Thank you Bill for helping me come out of my programming closet.1. Where did the author see the first computer? A at home B in a small village school C at high school D in the university2. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy who could not have been more than seven or eight years old replied, “Frankly, Ive been feeling a little depressed lately.” This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didnt find out we were “depressed”, that is, in low spirits, until we were in high school. Undoubtedly a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children dont seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why? Human development is depended not only on born biological states, but also on patterns of gaining social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new social positions. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages; traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders. In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (揭示) machine has been equipped in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more attractive moving pictures. Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information which children will gain. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.64. According to the author, feeling depressed is _. A. a sure sign of a mental problem in a child B. a mental state present in all humans, including children C. something hardly to be expected in a young child D. something that cannot be avoided in childrens mental development65. According to the author, that todays children seem adultlike results from _. A. the poor arrangement of teaching content B. the widespread influence of television C. the fast pace of human scientific development D. the rising standard of living64【答案】C【試題解析】事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。 As far as I can remember, my friends and I didnt find out we were “depressed”, that is, in low spirits, until we were in high school. 文章倒數(shù)第二節(jié)Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Her frozen fingers touched the flame trying to feel alive. She could feel the warmth but it was a cold heat, as if the candle was rejecting her. Her arms turned red because of the cold, her short sleeved shirt not giving her enough warmth. The winter air grabbed(抓住) at her arms, causing her pain, but she didnt mind. She knew she should put her jacket on, it was winter in Connecticut, but that would be giving up. Up here, in this tree she felt safe. She looked at the candle, surrounded by hardening wax(蠟). She placed her fingers gently on the warm green wax. This candle was a reminder of her life inside that house, a life she would have to return to eventually. As a child, she had gotten this candle. She spent all she had on it. The beautiful crystal box (水晶盒)had caught her eye. Five whole nickels(五分幣)had brought her that candle. She gave it to her mother for Mothers Day. Her mother had managed a smile and put it on a shelf. “Its very pretty, honey! I will put it right here.” Since then that candle had never been moved, never been lighted, sitting dusty on a cluttered shelf that no one could see. Later on, her parents got divorced. By now the candle was colder than the air and the darkness was complete. The snow on the ground made the night lighter and less satisfying than it had been before the first snowfall. She liked the darkness because she felt safe in it. From the glances of her friends who liked the girl she used to be. From the boys who could never figure out who she was. From her guidance counselor(顧問) whose endless worried looks never made her feel any better. No one was outside at this time of night. She was alone in the world, just how she liked it. Just as she was about to lean back against the branch, she heard a sound. She heard footsteps breaking the ice in the snow , heading toward her. He was making his way toward the white fence at the edge of the building, right against the road. Normally she would have ignored this person and stayed on her branch faraway from human contact, but this figure had something with him. He trudged(吃力地走) toward the white fence carrying a case. The figure reached the fence, opened the case and took out a shiny object. She took her eyes off this figure only long enough to climb down the tree to get a better view of him. She reached the bottom and saw that the person had turned to face the street, sitting on the white fence that she and her friends once sat on. She stepped carefully on the ice, making her way toward him. And then a beautiful sound of music came from the shiny object. She stopped and listened to it. She started walking towards the guy again. Just as she was about to step onto the snow banks, she slipped on the ice crashing to the ground. The figure turned around in surprise and a sudden recognition fell upon them both.62. The girl was hiding in the tree at deep night to _.A. keep herself from the coldB. wait for the boy to comeC. want to be left alone D. seek safety from any hurt63. From the story, we can learn that _.A. the girl suffered a lot in her lifeB. the girls parents divorced because of herC. teachers and friends treated the girl badlyD. the girl used to stay in the tree when feeling sad64. The underlined word “it” in the story refers to _. A. leaning back against the branch B. being alone in the worldC. not being disturbed at night D. it being dark with snow around65. From the end of the story, it can be known that the girl _.A. knew the person B. knew what the object wasC. realized her wishes D. would never feel alone any more62.【答案】D【試題解析】事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。 (Up here, in this tree she felt safe),故選D。 選項(xiàng)B. the girls parents divorced because of her這個(gè)女孩子的父母離婚了,因?yàn)樗?,文章沒提及為何離婚了,所以排除;選項(xiàng)C. teachers and friends treated the girl badly老師和朋友對女孩不好,而文章說她的指導(dǎo)老師(顧問)的無盡的擔(dān)憂,從來沒有使她感覺更好(From her guidance counselor(顧問) whose endless worried looks never made her feel any better),所以排除此選項(xiàng);選項(xiàng)D. the girl used to stay in the tree when feeling sad孩用過去常常待在樹上當(dāng)感到悲傷的時(shí)候,而文章說她待在樹上是因?yàn)楦杏X安全(Up here, in this tree she felt safe.),而非悲傷,所以排除。故選A。 She was alone in the world, just how she liked it. She was alone in the world,故選B。 (The figure turned around in surprise and a sudden recognition fell upon them both.)。 Going onlineRecently going online has become more and more popular with middle school students. In my opinion, there are some advantages for students to go online. First ,it can broaden our knowledge and make us know the latest news at home and abroad. Second, there are many learning materials on the Internet for us to learn English. Also ,we can make many online friends. However, there are some disadvantages. Most students play computer games instead of studying their lessons, which will affect their study. Whats worse, going online too often can do harm to our eyes. Besides, without much experience, its easy for us to make bad friends and be influenced to do stupid things. So I think as students, we can go online properly. We should choose things which are valuable to our study and life. Whats more, we should have a time limit. We must place study ,health and safety before other things.
