(2014·襄陽四中模擬)Lindsay Binegar of Greenfield, Ohio, made her first $100 at the age of four, when she won a prize for showing a pig from her family’s farm to the local 4H Club. Most kids would be thrilled to spend that money on toys, but not Lindsay. “I didn’t get the money; it went to the bank,” she told The Columbus Dispatch.
Over the years, Lindsay kept on raising and showing pigs, and kept on winning prizes. Some were $ 100 for small wins, but she won th
ousands of dollars for championship prizes at county fairs. Before long, she earned an impressive amount of cash — but, aside from a purse when she was 14, Lindsay had never spent a dollar of her savings. By the time she was 18, she had got more than $ 40,000, which she planned to put towards her college education at nearby Ohio University.
But her parents said that if she continued living at home while attending school, they wouldn’t have to pay for her dorm housing, and would be willing to cover the entire cost of her education. It sounded like a good deal to Lindsay. But what should she do with her savings?
Her father had an idea: buy a house, just as he’d done when he was young. He used the house’s sale to help him buy the family farm where Lindsay had grown up and raised all those lucrative (賺大錢的) pigs. Lindsay was able to buy a house in Greenfield, paying for the entire purchase in cash. She did a bit of painting and then rented it out for $450 a month.
After finishing college, Lindsay plans to marry Heath McNeal, and use the income from her house to buy a block of land and build a new house. But she’ll never move too far from home. “I would like to stay in Greenfield,” she said. “I just love everybody here.”
At her current rate, she’ll probably be the town’s biggest real estate tycoon (房地產大亨) by the age of 25.

(2014·四川成都四校聯(lián)考)People tend to have one of three beliefs about the meaning of work and which category you fall into largely depends on your parents, according to the new research from the University of Michigan.
Workers who are joboriented are those just trying to make a living who much prefer the activities they pursue outside of the office. Careeroriented adults — your typical “workaholic” — value the social status and reputation that comes with professional achievement, and gain much of their identity from their jobs. Callingoriented people do work that they are passionate about because they want to have a positive impact on the world.
In the first empirical study into how these orientations originate, researchers found that how teenagers view their parents’ work ethic is central to the development of their own work attitudes.
It’s not a straightforward transfer of values. People who perceive their father to have a strong careerorientation are more likely to be careeroriented themselves, but careerdetermined mothers have no effect on their kids’ work orientation. The researchers attributed this to generational gender norms. When the study’s participants were teenagers, mostly in the 1980s, men were more commonly employed outside of the home and were more likely than women to hold “career” jobs with opportunity for advancement.
Mothers do have a notable effect on whether children have a joborientation mentality. Teenagers who are close to their mothers are less likely to view work as just a job when they grow up, probably because they’ve been raised to value social, rather than instrumental, life experiences.
Having both parents display the same work ethic has an amplified influence, but only in the case of callingoriented children. As our society favors money and professional achievement, a child with two callingoriented parents is more likely to have the confidence to ignore these social pressures and pursue his dreams.
Children can affect their parents’ work ethic, too.Allowing people to bring their children into the office has been shown to improve efficiency and productivity — and could help raise that next generation of careeroriented workers.
35.If you are proud of being a teacher, and you are enthusiastic about your job, you belong to________.
A.the joboriented group
B.the careeroriented group
C.the workaholic group
D.the callingoriented group
36.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Children valuing their parents’ careerorientation will be careeroriented.
B.Fathers have a greater influence than mothers on teenagers’ attitude towards jobs.
C.Callingoriented mothers have little effect on their children’s work orientation.
D.Children’s attitudes towards jobs aren’t related to parents’.
37.What is the attitude of the child with two callingoriented parents towards the social pressure?
A.He takes no notice of it.
B.He thinks too highly of it.
C.He looks on it as a difficulty.
D.He considers it confusing.
38.If children are at their parents’ workplace, their parents________.
A.will not be affected by their children at all
B.will ask them to leave as quickly as they can
C.will be more effective and productive then
D.will probably feel nervous and embarrassed

(2014·安徽淮南一模)The main reason people come to America is said to be so that they can chase the American Dream. Everyone has heard of it, and many have died fighting for it. The only thing is that there is no clear definition of the American Dream. It is not defined by one dream, but all the opportunities that the United States has to offer. Since the founding of the United States, people have been striving to define the American Dream.
In the play Death of a Salesman, every character is trying to realize his own version of the American Dream. Willy feels that by being well liked he has achieved what the American Dream is all about. He has spent his whole life as a salesman who has not been very successful. As he gets older, he starts having conflicts with everyone in his life, and feels that only by killing himself will the people around him be able to finally be happy.
Bernard, on the other hand, feels that the American Dream can only be achieved if one has been successful in their academic and professional careers. He shows that through hard work and dedication(奉獻), success can be accomplished. He reached his professional goals and achieved his version of the American Dream.
Throughout the play these feelings are shown through the dialogue and actions of the characters. They try to achieve their goals of the American Dream. Willy Lowman is unsuccessful in his attempt, while Bernard is very successful in achieving his goal.
Many people try to achieve the American Dream, but few actually do so. As with any goal, the American Dream takes hard work and dedication. (2014·淮安高三調研)The extraordinary Eastgate Building in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, is said to be the only one in the world to use the same cooling and heating principles as the termite mound (白蟻堆).
Architect Mick Pearce used precisely the same strategy when designing the Eastgate Building, which has no airconditioning and almost no heating. The building—the country’s largest commercial and shopping complex—uses less than 10% of the energy of a conventional building of its size. The Eastgate’s owners saved $3.5 million on a $36 million building because an airconditioning plant didn’t have to be imported.
The complex is actually two buildings linked by bridges across a shady, glassroofed atrium (天井) open to the air. Fans suck fresh air in from the atrium, blow it upstairs through hollow spaces under the floors and from there into each office through baseboard vents (通風口). As it rises and warms, it is drawn out via ceiling vents and finally exists through fortyeight brick chimneys.
During summer’s cool nights, big fans blow air through the building seven times an hour to cool the empty floors. By day, smaller fans blow two changes of air an hour through the building, to circulate the air which has been in contact with the cool floors. For winter days, there are small heaters in the vents.
This is all possible only because Harare is 1,600 feet above sea level, has cloudless skies, little dampness and rapid temperature swings — days as warm as 31℃ commonly drop to 14℃ at night. “You couldn’t do this in New York, with its fantastically hot summers and fantastically cold winters,” Pearce said.
The engineering firm of Ove Arup&Partners monitors daily temperatures. It is found that the temperature of the building has generally stayed between 23℃ and 25℃, with the exception of the annual hot period just before the summer rains in October and three days in November, when a doorkeeper accidentally switched off the fans at night. And the air is fresh — far more so than in airconditioned buildings, where up to 30% of the air is recycled.
43.Why was Eastgate cheaper to be built than a conventional building?
A.It was designed in a smaller size.
B.No air conditioners were fixed in.
C.Its heating system was less advanced.
D.It used rather different building materials.
44.What does “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.Fresh air from outside.
B.Heat in the building.
C.Hollow space.
D.Baseboard vent.
45.Why would a building like Eastgate NOT work efficiently in New York?
A.New York has icss clear skies as Harare.
B.Its dampness affects the circulation of air.
C.New York covers a larger area than Harare.
D.Its temperature changes seasonally rather than daily.
46.The data in the last paragraph suggests Eastgate’s temperature control system__________.
A.allows a wide range of temperatures
B.functions well for most of the year
C.can recycle up to 30% of the air
D.works better in hot seasons

(2014·鎮(zhèn)江高三模擬)Harry Potter might have hung up his wand (魔杖) three years ago with the eighth and final installment (部) of his film series. However, that was not the end of the wizarding world’s story.
On March 31,US film producer Warner Bros.announced that the Harry Potter spinoff (衍生) book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will become a film trilogy (三部曲).
The movie is an adaptation of the 2001 book of the same title by Harry Potter author J.K.Rowling, published between the fourth and fifth books in the series.Diehard fans may know that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was mentioned in the first Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It is a fictional textbook at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that firstyear students are required to read. The textbook is a useful encyclopedia (百科全書) of the dark creatures studied in the Defense Against the Dark Arts courses.
The new story is set 70 years before the Harry Potter series, with the adventure kicking off in New York, meaning the popular boy wizard and his pals are unlikely to make an appearance. It will follow the adventures of Newt Scamander, a Ministry of Magic worker. He travels around the globe categorizing magical creatures, which adds a mysterious touch to the new trilogy. For example, glumbumbles, hippogriffs and the billywig are some interesting beasts that could appear in the spinoff movies.
A glumbumble is a flying insect that makes people sad when they eat a substance (物質) it produces called “treacle” (糖漿) .A hippogriff is a beast that is parteagle and parthorse, which individuals must bow to when approaching. And a billywig is a blue insect, which is also extremely dangerous and can cause victims to fly in the air uncontrollably for days.
While Rowling insists that the trilogy will focus on new corners of the wizarding world, plenty of the old Harry Potter crew has expressed interest in reprising (重現) their roles.Emma Watson, 23,who played Potter’s best friend Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, told MTV that she’d “definitely be up for a cameo (小配角)”!

B.It mainly teaches students how to become a professional wizard in the Harry Potter series.
C.The book was written by J.K.Rowling after she had completed the entire Harry Potter series.
D.In the first Potter book, it is mentioned as a textbook at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

B.Billywigs can make people lose control of themselves and fly in the sky for days.
C.Newt Scamander discovers only three types of magical creatures during his global journey.
D.Whichever magical beast people come across, they have to bow to them to show respect.

A.most of the old Harry Potter crew will appear in the new movie
B.the film trilogy is expected to be released in about a year from now
C.Emma Watson is excited about the possibility of appearing in the movie
D.the new movie could be more popular than the Harry Potter film series was
50.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?
