In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文)showing how it was used. This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford. Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff's most valued contributors. But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a booklined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院)for the Criminally Insane. Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds. In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.31. One of the concepts that I have seen this year is whether to purchase a real Christmas tree or an artificial tree. Which one is more “Green”? People are leaning in the wrong direction when they assume that the artificial Christmas tree poses less of a threat to the Earth. The truth of the matter is, if you have to have a tree this year (because the greenest option is no tree) the real tree is far more ecofriendly than the fake one. Why? Most of the artificial trees are made of PVC. Beyond the fact that the creation of PVC emits nasty gases into the atmosphere, this plastic is definitely not recyclable, which means that you should throw away artificial trees and bury them in land and that is something that ecoconscious people want to steer away from. If you want to take your sustainable Christmas tree, find a local organic Christmas tree farm. They don't use the harmful pesticides and chemicals. You will want to start thinking and planning ahead in order to locate the best place to purchase your “Green” Christmas tree. Don't forget to figure out what you will do with your tree after the holiday is over as well. Here are some Earthfriendly ways to dispose of your real tree this year:1) If you purchased the tree at an organic tree farm and you are sure that it wasn't treated with harmful chemicals, think about dumping it into a small lake or pond. It can offer a wonderful new play land for fish.2) Most cities gather trees on a certain day after Christmas. Be sure to call your local township and ask them if and when they do this prior to the holidays.3) You could replant it, however, you will need to make sure that you choose the right tree and have enough roots to make this option work. Planning ahead is the key to hosting a Green Christmas this year. Map out where you will purchase your tree and where and how you will dispose of it prior to Christmas in order to achieve the most sustainable plans. You don't have to go treeless to enjoy a Green Holiday Season. Just make sure that you look into all of your options and choose the most sustainable option that is available in your area. be accustomed to (doing) sth. approve of sb. doing sth. be worth doing 值得做;be worthy of sth./being done值得做;be worthy to be done 值得做 所以答案是B。 lay out展開(kāi),擺開(kāi);lay off(暫時(shí))解雇,裁減;lay aside 放在一邊;lay down放下,規(guī)定,制定。. 18. B 由句中“in the care of babysitters or nurseries”可知是將孩子留給他人照管,所以用leaving。19. 根據(jù)前面“pressures of their work and the very brisk pace of life”可推測(cè)我們處于一個(gè)競(jìng)爭(zhēng)非常激烈的社會(huì)。21A22. D provide sb. with sth.“提供某物給某人”。 29. A common to sb. 從最后一段的“Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed.”看出A選項(xiàng)是不正確的;從第二段的“Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England.” 從第三段的“Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray.” 從第四段的“Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a booklined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum for the Criminally Insane.” 故選A。34. 從第二段Minor自愿加入編詞典這個(gè)活動(dòng)可知,他對(duì)此很感興趣,與Murray有著共同的興趣,再?gòu)奈恼碌箶?shù)第三段的“Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years.” .35. Greener36. Artificial/Fake37. gives38. end39.
