We may have hosted some difficult house guests once or on even more occasions. Are you still worrying about how to deal with them? Here below are some tips on how to deal with those difficult house guests. You've been waiting an hour to eat breakfast but your guests are still sleeping.“Unless you adjusted a time for breakfast the evening before, let your guests sleep in and enjoy your breakfast without them. If possible, keep their breakfast warm. Or better yet, when entertaining it's always a good idea to have cold breakfast (as well as lunch, dinner and snack ) food onhand. ”Pamela Eyring, president and director of The Protocol School of WashingtonYour guest's teenage son is a Facebook addict and hogs your computer all day long.“If you have a guest whose fingers are fixated on your keyboard, kindly let him know that you are expecting work email and give him enough time to finish using it. ”Ummu Bradley Thomas, founder of the Freddie Bell Jones Modeling & Finishing School, Inc. Your couch surfing, unemployed nephew has been here a month and is showing no sign of leaving. “There is nothing wrong with saying John, you have been here a month and have not put in any applications. What can I do to help you get your resume together? I would like to make a plan that will assist you in getting back on your feet and allow me to eventually have my extra room back for guests that will soon be arriving. ”Diane Gottsman, owner of The Protocol School of Texas Your guests expect you to accompany them to every single tourist attraction in your city. It's tiring and expensive.“If your guests didn't offer to treat you, politely decline and offer to meet them afterwards for dinner or drinks. That way they know you enjoy their company. ”Pamela Eyring, president and director of The Protocol School of WashingtonYou gave your friend a closet shelf for her stuff but her clothes are thrown all over the place.“You should simply say I am happy to have you use my closet but your clothes seem to have a mind of their own. Would you mind keeping your clothes on the top shelf? It would make it easier for me to find my things when I am in a rush and looking for them. Thank you. ”Diane Gottsman, owner of The Protocol School of Texas【語篇解讀】 當(dāng)家里來了難纏的客人時,該怎樣應(yīng)對呢? 16Which of the following kinds of guests has NOT been mentioned in the passage?ASome guests who get up late in the morning.BThe Facebook addict who hogs your computer all day long.CA vegetarian husband and a wife who is a picky eater.DAn unemployed nephew who is not leaving after a long time. 17According to Ummu Bradley Thomas, which of the following is the best way to deal with the guests?AKindly explaining to him you need to use the computer.BPolitely asking him to stop using the computer at once.CIntroducing other toys to him to play with.DSimply letting him keep using the computer as he likes. 根據(jù)文中的“kindly let him know that you are expecting work email and give him enough time to finish using it”可知,他建議我們禮貌地向客人解釋自己要用電腦,并給客人足夠的時間處理完事情,故答案為A項。18The passage gives the following tips EXCEPT_.Adeclining the guests' requests if you hate to accompany them everywhereBreminding them to keep their clothes on the top shelfCtrying to offer at least one dish based on his or her preferencesDkeeping their breakfast warm or having cold breakfast food onhand答案C考查細(xì)節(jié)理解。 19Which of the following is the best title for this passage?AHow to Entertain Your GuestsBHow to Keep Good Personal RelationsCHow to Find the Best SolutionDHow to Deal with Difficult House Guests答案D考查主旨大意。 Once when I was six years old,I saw an amazing picture in a book called True Stories from Nature about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor(大蟒蛇) in the act of swallowing an animal. In the book it said:“Boa constrictors swallow their prey wholly without chewing it.After that they are not able to move and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.”I thought deeply then over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil,I succeeded in making my first drawing,my Drawing Number One.I showed my work to the grownups and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered: “Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?”My drawing was not a picture of a hat.It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grownups were not able to understand it,I made another drawing.I drew the inside of the boa constrictor so that the grownups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. That's my Drawing Number Two.The grownups' response this time was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors whether from the inside or the outside and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. That is why at the age of six I gave up the dream that I might have been a great painter.I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two.Grownups never understand anything by themselves and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.So then I chose another profession and learned to pilot airplanes.I have flown a little over all parts of the world, and it is true that geography has been very useful to me.At a glance,I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable. In the course of this life,I have had lots of chances to meet with a great many people. And that hasn't much improved my opinion of them.Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clearsighted,I tried showing him my Drawing Number One which I have always kept.I would try to find out if this was a person of true understanding. But whoever it was,he or she would always say: That is a hat. Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors or primeval forests or stars.I would bring myself down to his level.I would talk to him about bridge, golf, politics and neckties. And the grownup would be greatly pleased to have met such an intelligent man.【語篇導(dǎo)讀】作者的兩幅畫一直都得不到人們的真正理解,他感到非常困惑,希望能遇到一個理解自己的人,但希望總是落空。20The writer drew his first picture in order to_.Ashow the grownups what the book was aboutBfrighten the grownups trying to enter the forestCremind himself of the adventures of the jungleDillustrate a boa constrictor's act of digesting an animal答案D推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段中的“It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant.” 21How did the writer understand the grownups' response to his second drawing?AHe was actually only good at academic study.BIt was a waste of time for him to keep on drawing.CHe had difficulty in communicating with the adults.DHe was good at anything but geography. 22The underlined word “disheartened”in Paragraph 4 could most probably be replaced by_.Adiscouraged BdissatisfiedCdiscriminated Ddisturbed答案A詞義猜測題。 故選A項。23Which of the following statements is true?AThe writer could have become a pilot if encouraged when young.BThe writer finally changed his opinion of grownups.CThe writer has been showing his two pictures to others ever since.DThe writer felt nobody could have really understood him. 根據(jù)最后一段中的“I would try to find out if this was a person of true understanding. But whoever it was,he or she would always say:That is a hat.” 閱讀理解解讀Expensive perfumes (香水) come in tiny bottles, but many hide a whalesized secret. To perfect a particular smell, perfumemakers often use an ingredient that comes from sperm whales, called ambergris. But using ambergris, which helps a perfume last longer, is strongly opposed by many people who think it is wrong to kill whales just so we can smell sweet. Joerg Bohlmann is neither a perfumer nor a whale expert. He's a plant biologist at the University of British Columbia in Canada. But his discovery of a new plant gene (基因) might push whales out of the perfume business. The gene comes from fir trees, found throughout North America and commonly used as Christmas trees. The trees produce a chemical that can be used in perfume in place of ambergrisbut with_a_catch.“There's a problem that many people wouldn't consider. In the tree, the chemical is mixed with many others. That makes separation a challenge,” Bohlmann says. “It's like trying to isolate sugar from a biscuit.”This is where science becomes useful. When Bohlmann learned that fir trees produce the ambergrislike chemical, he decided to use his gene knowhow to find the instructions for how to make the ambergrissubstitute.Bohlmann found that gene and took it out of the tree cells. Then he did something that might sound strange to someone who doesn't work in genetics: Bohlmann put the gene from the tree into yeast (酵母) cells.Yeast may sound familiar because it's used to make things like bread, wine and beer. Biologists like to work with yeast because it easily adopts new genes and changes its features and behaviour. When Bohlmann put the fir tree gene into the yeast, the yeast started making the same chemical that had been produced by the tree.Perfumers pay big money for ambergris because it is a fixative, which means it holds a smell in place on a person's body.“Cheap perfumes smell good in the first hour or so and then everything is gone,” explains Bohlmann. “But expensive perfumes are much more stable. Their smell lasts much longer, for hours or even a day after you apply them.”The new chemical, made from the tree genes, can be used as a fixative, too. And using yeast to make it is far cheaper than acquiring ambergris.Bohlmann admits he never thought he'd get into the perfume business. But now, he says, producers have been calling to find out how to use his technology in new perfumes. 16It can be inferred from the passage that if a perfume contains ambergris, _.Aits user probably supports whale huntingBits smell will last for about an hourCthere will be a whale symbol on the bottleDit is probably very expensive17The underlined expression “with a catch” in Paragraph 3 means _.Abeing difficult to hold Bhaving a hidden problemCneeding further testing Dbeing too similar18According to the passage, why are yeast cells often used in genetic research?AThey can take on the characteristics of other genes.BThey can reproduce much faster than other cells.CThey share some of the qualities of plant genes.DThey're much cheaper to use than ambergris. 根據(jù)第七段第二句中“it easily adopts new genes and changes its features and behaviour.” 19What can we learn about Joerg Bohlmann from the passage?AHe is opposed to whale hunting.BHe made his discovery during Christmas.CHe has worked in the perfume industry for many years.DHe has previously done genetic research.20What is the best title for the passage?AThe Christmas tree's secret.BThe sweet smell of success.CWhalefree perfume.DSave the whale. I was driving home the other day on a sunny afternoon. I had a smile on my face as I sang along to the songs on the radio. It was such a beautiful day that I felt full of happiness. My good mood ended, however, when the radio station took a news break between songs. Then suddenly I found myself listening to yet another story of a rich famous man who had broken the law. I shook my head as I came to a red traffic light. As I pulled to a stop I noticed four leatherjacketed bikers. They were standing in the middle of the road with two on either side of the light. They looked rough and dangerous, but as I got closer I noticed each one was holding their helmet in their hands. I rolled down my window as one approached my car. “We are the Brother of the Wheel,” he said. “We are collecting money for Christmas Toy Drive for needy children.” As I pulled a dollar out of my wallet I looked past his beard and into his eyes. They shined with goodness and kindness that came right from his soul. I dropped the money in his helmet and waved to the other bikers as I drove off. My good mood had returned. My faith in mankind had been bolstered. And I remembered once again never to judge people by their appearance. Our society often judges books by their covers but God reads what is written in our hearts and souls. Perhaps one day we will all learn to see the world through the same eyes. Perhaps one day we will realize that looks matter little and actions matter much. 1The writer's good mood ended when _.Ahe heard news between songsBhe had to stop at a red traffic lightChe heard a rich man broke the lawDhe saw four leatherjacketed bikers2What were the four bikers doing at the traffic lights?AHaving a bicycle race in the street.BSelling helmets to the passersby.CRaising money to help kids in need.DPreparing for Christmas holidays.3What does “bolstered” in the second paragraph probably mean?ADestroyed. BImproved.CDecreased. DExploded. B。4The writer wants to tell us that we should _.Ahave faith in young peopleBjudge others by their actionsCchange our attitude to societyDmanage to help others in need
