ACoffee is one of the world's most widely-enjoyed drinks. Now,a new research suggests that if you drink enough coffee,it might help you avoid certain kinds of cancer.Dr Mia Hashibe of the University of Utah School of Medicine was interested in the connection between coffee drinking and certain cancers of the head and neck. Researchers have looked into this before, but without reaching any firm conclusions. She said, “So this finding from our new study was quite a surprise. We didn't really have any expectation of which direction it could go into.”To sort out the confusion, Hashibe and her assistants used statistical(統(tǒng)計(jì)學(xué)的) techniques to, in effect, make one big study out of the earlier smaller studies. She explained,“Thanks to the earlier studies, we have a lot more power than earlier studies that looked at this. And we included 4,000 cancer patients who have cancer of the mouth and throat. And then 9,000 controls, people who do not have cancer.” Those studies in Europe and the United States found that people who drank a lot of coffee were less likely to develop cancers of the mouth and throat. “We saw 4 cups of coffee per day,”Hashibe said, “This was the 40 percent decrease in risk. We did not see the same effect for drinking three cups or less per day.”Mia Hashibe said there was a weak connection between cancer risk and drinking coffee without caffeine. And she and her assistants found no proof that drinking tea provided the same protection as drinking coffee. Their research is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.Hashibe says it is not clear how coffee might protect drinkers from certain cancers. “There are a few chemicals that are known to be antioxidants(抗氧化物) in coffee. So we are thinking perhaps they are playing some sort of protective role against several cancers.”36.This passage is probably taken from ________.A.a(chǎn) literature book B.a(chǎn) travel journal C.a(chǎn)n old directory D.a(chǎn) medical magazine37.Dr Hashibe expected nothing of her research because ________.A.it was impossible to get the desired resultB.the research was much surprising in factC.no conclusions had been reached beforeD.the research team lacked faith in success38.What do we know about Dr Mia Hashibe and her research?A.She knew for sure how coffee may affect drinkers.B.She included 4,000 people without cancer in study.C.She found an effect for three cups of coffee a day.D.She based her research on several earlier studies.39.What would be the best title for the text?A.Drinking Coffee May Protect Some CancersB.Drinking Coffee May Prevent Some CancersC.Drinking Coffee May Cure Some CancersD.Drinking Coffee May Cause Some CancersBI had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs and toast. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids'. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I'm now trying to bring up my three children. I'm filled with pride when my children think I am mean because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world.40.From the passage we can learn that the writer's mother was ________.A.not generous at all B.very strict with her childrenC.very mean with money matters D.very cruel to her children41.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A.the writer worked hard and usually got good grades in studiesB.mother was punished for breaking the Child Labor LawC.a(chǎn)ll the other kids studied better than the writerD.the writer's family lived a miserable life42.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A.Mother practised economy in running her home.B.The writer is very thankful for her mother.C.The writer is severe with her children when bringing them up.D.The writer has a deep hatred for her mother.43.The passage was written in a way of ________ tone.A.humorous B.hateful C.ridiculous D.criticalCSurface Exploration. Robots make great explorers on planets, moons, and other landing areas. Aside from the Earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans to withstand. Plus there would be complications with radiation, weather, and a lack of gravity. Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions.Data Collection. Robots are designed for collecting scientific data. Robots are also able to perform many tasks at a time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently. Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, and finding water are all performed more quickly and accurately (精確地) by robots.Cost Effective. The use of robots have made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work. In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end. Robots never complain, they don't require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break.Space Travel. Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space. Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are the Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars' history.44.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A.The use of robots in space exploration cost more than the use of humans.B.It may be dangerous for humans to explore the solar system except the Earth.C.Both the Spirit and Opportunity have found the evidence of water in the Mars.D.Many different types of robots have explored the space successfully.45.Which column could the passage come from?A.Education. B.Finance. C.Travel. C.Subjective. D.Objective.DThe European Union announced plans on Tuesday to temporarily ban the use of animal cloning for food production, while allowing imports of food derived from the offspring(后代) of clones from the United States and elsewhere. The report from the European Commission followed a call by EU lawmakers in July for a total ban on food derived from cloned animals and their traditionally bred offspring, citing ethical concerns over the industrial production of cloned meat. The Commission said a temporary five-year EU ban on cloning for food production was justified on animal welfare grounds, but said banning imports of food from the offspring of clones was unnecessary and would disrupt global trade.“Food from cloned animals is safe. In fact, the scientific opinion is that it cannot be differentiated in any way from food from normally bred animals. The issue is animal welfare,” EU Health and Consumer Commissioner John Dalli told reporters.Food derived from the offspring of clones presents no such animal welfare issues, and banning its sale and import would be impossible because the origin is untraceable, Dalli said.“Such a prohibition would lead to a ban of imports of any food of animal origin (meat, milk and processed products) from third countries allowing the cloning technique,” the report said.“We're not going to regulate for the world,” Dalli added. But animal welfare groups criticized the Commission's decision, saying it had bowed to pressure from third countries.“We do not accept the Commission's position that it would be impossible to enforce a ban that includes the offspring of cloned animals, as (other) meat traceability systems are already in place,” said Sonja Van Tichelen, director of the Eurogroup for Animals.48.From the passage we can infer the ban is ________.A.justified B.welcome C.controversial D.meaningless49.The text is most probably a ________.A.news report B.book review C.newspaper ad D.science fiction story50.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.The ban is permanent.B.The imports of food from the offspring of clones are not banned.C.Animal welfare groups support the ban.D.The ban has been into effect.51.What might be the most suitable title for the passage?A.The plans of the European UnionB.A temporary five-year EU banC.EU proposes ban on animal cloning for foodD.The danger of food derived from cloned animalsEHe is regarded as having one of the brightest minds on the planet. But outstanding astrophysicist(天體物理學(xué)家) Stephen Hawking has admitted that he did not learn to read until he was eight years old.In a public lecture at the Royal Albert Hall,Professor Hawking also admitted that he was not active in studying while at Oxford University, where he studied physics, and that only the diagnosis that he might die young from motor neurone(神經(jīng)元) disease made him concentrate on his work.Professor Hawking said,“My sister Philippa could read by the age of 4 but then she was definitely brighter than me.” He said that he was unexceptional at school and was never further than halfway up his class. “My classwork was very untidy, and my handwriting was the despair of my teachers,”he said. “But my classmates gave me the nickname Einstein,so presumably they saw signs of something better.”But he said that it was when doctors told him that he probably only had a few years to live at the age of 21 that galvanized him into focusing on his work and a period of productivity that resulted in some of his early breakthroughs. He said,“When you are faced with the possibility of an early death,it makes you realize that life is worth living and there are lots of things you want to do.”52.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.Stephen Hawking is the second Einstein in the world.B.Stephen Hawking couldn't read at the age of 7.C.Stephen Hawking's handwriting was once terrible.D.Stephen Hawking's sister once performed much better than him.53.We can infer that Stephen Hawking was ________when he was a child and studied in Oxford University.A.clever B.lazy C.bright D.mean54.What made Stephen Hawking devote himself to his work?A.Patience. 注意:每個(gè)空格只填一個(gè)單詞Speaking in public is most people's least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fools of ourselves. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become. But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It's just plain talking, and you talk all the time. Although I'm basically shy (honest!), I've been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years, and I can tell you that public speaking is not a “gift” like musical talent. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned: Your audience is going to come away with one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not 10 or 20. If you can't express in a sentence or two what you intend to get across, then your speech is not focused on well enough. And if you don't have a clear idea of what you want to say, there's no way your audience will.No matter how long or short your speech is, you've got to get your ducks in a row—how you are going to open, what major points you want to make and how you're going to close. When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first. When you know where you're headed, you can choose any route to get there. A strong close is critical: the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. The standard length of a vaudeville act is usually 12 minutes.
