Explain the following quotes from the reading passage.l 1. In Shakespeares play, the stage sets were often mixed up with some of the audiences. These people were not actors, but they had paid a few more pennies so that they could sit on the stage watching the play better. Shakespeares plays were also very popular because they invariably followed the fashion of the pop culture then. For example those “trendy” or “popular” scenes would not be missed out, and those scenes were always “popular” for the audience in those days. Pop songs were always incorporated into the play if possible. The production was so fast that the writing worked out this week would go into the list of performance in the next week. l 2.Shakespeare was an approachable person, never putting up an air as a celebrity. He was very clear and conscious about his responsibility of an artist when he wrote his works because he knew that his works would be subject to the test of history. He knew that human life was short (thats why he often look over his shoulder at the tide of death chasing him), but art was everlasting. Great work of art wouldnt die with their authors passing away. So his greatest pleasure would be seeing his wealth of words have succeeded in tricking death, and becoming immortal in history. lLanguage work:l1. a second Bible: an extreme book/workl2. flocking to .: going there/visiting in great quantitiesl3. a wealth of a great number of l4.meager makings: humble undertakingsl5. a cut-throat competition: a very fierce competitionl6.excursion into: opportunities to experience, see, feel , hear l7. universal appeal: loved by people all over the worldl8.no substitute for seeing: nothing can be compared with seeingl9. far-off times: ancient times, l10.edifying entertainment : pleasure coupled with enlightenmentsl11.glossy fume and adulation: great popularity, shining image or worshipl12. glancing over ones shoulder: look backl13. a world people by.: a world full of such people as characters lDictation:lBy 1592, Shakespeare became known for both an actor and playwright. And in 1594 he became a financial shareholder in the newly formed group called Lord Chamberlains Men after the title of his patron. Like other playwrights, Shakespeare was only paid a small fee for his work, and the manuscripts became the property of the theatrical company. One member of the company , called the book holder, was responsible for the manuscripts. Often lthere was only one copy of the play in existence, and it was used as a prompt book during a performance. The book holder also prepared a scene by scene outline called the plot which summarized the action of the play. The plot was important to the actors because each of them had no more than a partial manuscripts containing only his own lines. Over a period of 5 years, the Lord Chamberlains Men appeared in two or three different theatres. Then in 1599, they moved to their own newly lConstructed theatre which they called the Globe. As a shareholder in the new theatre, Shakespeare was entitled to receive 10% of the admission fees paid by the audience . Like other theatres in London, the Globe had very little scenery. Each setting was established in the minds of the audience by the words the playwright had assigned to the actors.
