Directions: In this part are 4 passages. Each passage is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are 4 choices marked A,B,C
and D.You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding
on the Answer Sheet.
Passage One
letter
“If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it! 〞
That may seem a strange thing to say.But touching things can help you to see them better.Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is.You can feel how heavy the glass is.When you feel all these about the ball, you
really see it.With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers
can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too.
All children soon learn what “Don’t touch! 〞means. They hear it often.Yet
most of us keep on touching things as we grow up.In shops,we touch things
as we might buy:food, clothes. To see something well,we have to touch it.There
are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes
and try to feel everything that is touching your skin.Feel the shoes on your
feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first,it is not easy
to feel these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things
to touch.Their signs say, “Do touch! 〞There you can feel everything
we want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!

Passage Two
Pronouncing a language is a skill.Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language, but few people are even moderately proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this. Some are obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the
fundamental reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages much better than they do in their own languages is that they fail to grasp the
true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce them, and consequently never set about speaking them in the right way.Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be acquired by just leaving
it to take care of itself.I think even teachers of language, while recognizing
the importance of a good accent, tend to neglect,in their practical
teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught, the
teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson to this, and
attitude to the subject should make the students feel that here is a matter
worthy of receiving their close attention.

Passage Three
I strongly believe that understanding is more important than love, especially when it comes to parenting and intimate relationships. As a psychologist for more than twenty years I can tell you that I have never had
an adult looking back at her childhood and complaining that her parents too understanding. And similarly,I have met many divorced people who still love each other but yet they never really understood each other.
were
The painful reality is love is just not enough.I
’ll admit that there are
people who I love and who I still need to better understand.I hope I ’ll
continue my work to understand them. The willingness to understand is very
important. It is not always easy, but healthy love is strengthened by the
willingness to understand.Love without understanding will wilt like flowers
without water.
Our egos are what seem to get in the way of understanding those who we love
and care about.Often it is our need to be right that makes what others think and feel so wrong for us.I have certainly been quite guilty of this in some of my relationships.
As I have written repeatedly in my books, empathy,is truly the emotional
glue that holds all close relationships together.Empathy allows us to slow
down and try to walk in
the shoes of
those
we love.The
deeper our empathy,the
deeper-and healthier-our
love.Not
all relationships
are meant to be.Yet all
relationships that are meant to flourish in a healthy way, must stress
understanding just as much,if not more, than love.

.
A.the author complains about her parents

’t love each other

’t understand each other

Passage Four
Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to
graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may
count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a
degree consists of thirty six courses each lasting for one semester.A typical
course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks;while attending
a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each
semester.Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two
semesters each year.It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree
over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one
university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact
done as a regular practice.
For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is
recorded and available for the student to show to prospective employers. All
this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some
students still find time for great activity in student affairs.Elections to
positions in student organizations arouse muchenthusiasm. The effective work
of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the
academic authorities.Any
student
who is
thought
to have broken the
rules,for
example,by cheating, has to appear before a student court. With the enormous
numbers of
students,the
operation
of the
system does involve
a certain amount
of activity.A
student
who has held one of these
positions of

IV.Translation(20 points)
Directions:
In this part, there is one passage in English.Read the passage
carefully and translate it into Chinese.
The advantage and disadvantage of a large population have a subject of
discussion.It
has been argued that
the supply
of good land is
limited.To feed
a large
population,inferior
land
must be cultivated
and the
good land
worked
intensively. Thus each person produced less and this means a lower average
income than could be obtained with a small population.Other economists have
argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the
development of facilities such as ports, roads and ports, roads and
railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to
justify them.
