Women, be on your guard. There is a new male excuse for not listening to us.A recent study shows that men find it almost impossible to listen to what women say because their brains are out of synch(不同步的)with "plex female tones". Apparently, when men listen to other men about the things they care about, they use only the frontal area of their brains. However, when they listen to women it's different story. They have to work much harder, employing a part of the brain that normally deals with music. So when a man tells you your voice is "music to his ears", he's actually telling the truth, though not in a good way. I'm sure a lot of women could recall times when they have wasted hours explaining why they are pletely right about everything in the world, only to wake up the next day to discover that not one brilliant point got through. Those times when men haven't listened to me, I just thought I was being ignored. I didn't realize I just wasn't singing their favorite music. If I'd realized I was being heard as "music", I would have had a bit of fun with it. Whenever I wanted a "discussion", I'd have brought along my own band, plete with string and horn sections. It is difficult not to be suspicious of yet more scientific findings sparing men the blame because of their biology. Isn't this "slaves to biology" all-purpose excuse wearing thin? It's enough to make you wonder at what a strange helpless species men are -which part of the body will be "beyond their control" next. Even if there is something in it, we have to take into account that most relationships are likely to bee boring. That's the truth of the matter. Male or female, your voice might start out as music to your beloved's ears. But finally it will end up as boredom. When your beautiful tones are there all the time, as they go about their daily business, you start to blend in a bit too much, until finally you bee a kind of background noise. 1 The author of this passage tries to _. A. throw doubts on a monly accepted idea B. explain a monly accepted idea as it is C. give some advice on a mon problem D. argue against a mon belief 答案解析:答案為B。 B。2According to the new study, men don't listen to women because _ . A. what women say are usually boring B. they don't care about what women say C. they can't deal with female voices D. they regard female voices as music 答案解析:答案為C。 3The underlined sentence in the fifth paragraph shows that the author is _. A. realistic B. humorous C. serious D. funny 答案解析:答案為B。 4What does the author think of the finding of the new study? A. She thinks it doubtful. B. She thinks it interesting. C. She thinks it needs further proof. D. She thinks it right. 由倒數(shù)第三段首句 “It is difficult not to be suspicious of ” 可知,本句話的同義詞就是doubtful. A。5The author would most probably agree that _. A. men should accept what women say B. women should talk less and do more housework C. however beautiful voices may be, they will finally bee boring D. the relationship between men and women should always be improving 答案解析:答案為C。 從最后一段 “When your beautiful tones are there all the time, as they go about their daily business, you start to blend in a bit too much, until finally you bee a kind of background noise.” A、B未提及;倒數(shù)第二段首句提到了 “ most relationships are likely to bee boring.” Too much TV-watching can harm children's ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children. One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs. A second study ,looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don't prove that TV is the cause and don't ride out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年輕人)may watch lots of TV. Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages5 and 15. These with college degrees had watch an average of less than two hours of TV per week night during childhood, pared with an average of more than 2 1/2 hours for those who had no education beyond high school. In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no puter at home scored the lowest while those with no bedroom TV but who had home puters scored the highest. While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to accumulating findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms. ( ) 1. According to the California study, the low-scoring group might _. A. have watched a lot of TV B. not be interested ted in math C. be unable to go to college D. have had puters in their bedrooms ( ) 2. What is the researchers' understanding of the New Zealand study results? A. Poorly motivated 26-year-olds watch more TV. B. Habits of TV watching reduce learning interest. C. TV watching leads to lower education levels of the 15-year-olds. D. The connection between TV and education levels is difficult to explain ( ) 3. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs? A. More time should be spent on puters. B. Children should be forbidden from watching TV. C. 'IV sets shouldn't be allowed in children's bedrooms. D. Further studies on high-achieving students should be done. ( ) 4. What would be the best title for this text? A. puters or Television B. Effects of Television on Children C. Studies on TV and College EducationD. Television and Children's Learning Habits 1. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs. But the results don' prove that TV is the cause and don't ride t out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年輕人)may watch lots of TV. One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(卑微的) to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast. We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide rang of things. We never introduced ourselves. Best of all, it is free! Its “no”.What do you ask? Well say it again: “No”.Sweet and simple “no”.Say “no” at your office and see how quickly that pile of work on your desk disappears.“Saying no to others means you are saying yes to yourself, ” said Leslie Charles, a professional speaker from East Lansing, Michigan.“Time is precious. People are spending money buying time. And yet we are willing to give up our time because we cant say no.” Susie Watson, a famous writer, said people who always say “yes” need to say “no” without guilt(內(nèi)疚)or fear of punishment. “I would rather have someone give me a loving no than an obligated(強制的) yes, ” she said. Susie Watson says she feels “no” obligation to give an explanation when she says “no” either socially or professionally. Does she feel guilty about it? “Not at all, ” said Watson, who is director of advertising and public relations at Timex Corp in Middlebury, Conneticut. “Most people are afraid of saying no My advice is to say yes only if you dont mean no.” Watson said “no” is the most effective weapon against wasting time. “Every year there are more demands on your time Other people are happy to use up your time, ” Watson said. Time saving appears to be “nos” greatest friend.“No” can be your new friend, a powerful tool to take back your life. “No” may even take you further in the business world than “yes”.“No” is power and strength. “No” now seems pletely correct. “Saying no isnt easy. But finally its greatly liberating,” Charles said. But, he added, a “no” project needs to be worked on every day because it is hard to change long-term habit. But, he also warns: “Dont go to extremes.
