A study involving 8,500 teenagers from all social backgrounds found that most of them are ignorant when it es to money. The findings, the first in a series of reports from Nat West that has started a fiveyear research project into teenagers and money, are particularly worrying as this generation of young people is likely to be burdened with greater debts than any before. University tuition fees (學費) are currently capped at 3,000 annually, but this will be reviewed next year and the Government is under enormous pressure to_raise_the_ceiling.In the research, the teenagers were presented with the terms of four different loans but 76 percent failed to identify the cheapest. The young people also predicted that they would be earning on average 31,000 by the age of 25, although the average salary for those aged 22 to 29 is just 17,815. The teenagers expected to be in debt when they finished university or training, although half said that they assumed the debts would be less than 10,000. Average debts for graduates are 12,363.Stephen Moir, head of munity investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns Nat West, said. “The more exposed young people are to financial issues, and the younger they bee aware of them, the more likely they are to bee responsible, forwardplanning adults who manage their finances confidently and effectively.”Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of students loans and rising housing costs. They have just introduced new lessons in how to manage debts. Nikki Fairweather, aged 15, from St Helens, said that she had benefited from lessons on personal finance, but admitted that she still had a lot to learn about money. 1Which of the following can be found from the fiveyear research project?AStudents understand personal finances differently.BUniversity tuition fees in England have been rising.CTeenagers tend to overestimate their future earnings.DThe students payback ability has bee a major issue. 從第一段第一句話“most of them are ignorant when it es to money”可以得出答案,“青少年傾向于過高估計了他們未來賺錢的前景”而沒有意識到他們會在未來面臨的各種債務(wù),故選C項。2The underlined phrase “to raise the ceiling” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_”Ato raise the student loansBto improve the school facilitiesCto increase the upper limit of the tuitionDto lift the school building roofs答案:C 考查詞義猜測。 3.According to Stephen Moir, students_.Aare too young to be exposed to financial issuesBshould learn to manage their finances wellCshould maintain a positive attitude when facing loansDbenefit a lot from lessons on personal finance答案:B 考查推理判斷。 4What can we learn from the passage?AMany British teenagers do not know money matters well.BTeenagers in Britain are heavily burdened with debts.CFinancial planning is a required course at college.DYoung people should bee responsible adults. 個人的;私人的1in debt 負債 2.be concerned about 對擔憂3benefit from 從中受益原文:the younger they bee aware of them, the more likely they are to bee responsible.(the比較級, the比較級)譯文:他們越年輕意識到他們(經(jīng)濟問題),他們越可能變得負責。 The_harder you work, the_greater_progress you will make. Nick Vujicic was born with no arms or legs, but the brave 32yearold man, plays football and golf, swims, and surfs. Nick has a small foot on his left side, which helps him balance and enables him to kick. He uses his one foot to type, write with a pen and pick things up between his toes.“I call it my chicken drumstick,” joked Nick. “Id be lost without it. When I get in the water I float because 80 percent of my body is lungs and my drumstick acts as a propeller (螺旋槳)” When Nick was born, his father was so shocked he left the hospital room to vomit. His distraught mother couldnt bring herself to hold him until he was four months old.“It was so hard for them, but right from the start they did their best to make me independent. My dad put me in the water when I was 18 months old and gave me the courage to learn how to swim,” said Nick.Throughout his childhood Nick dealt with the typical challenges. At the age of seven, Nick tried out some specially designed electronic arms and legs, in the hope that he would be more like other kids. During the short trial period of the electronic arms and legs, Nick realized that even with them, he was still unlike his peers at school, and they turned out to be much too heavy for Nick to operate, affecting his flexibility quite significantly.“When I was 13 I read a newspaper article about a disabled man who had managed to achieve great things and help others,” said Nick, “I realized why God had made us like thisto give hope to others. It was so inspirational to me that I decided to use my life to encourage others and decided to be thankful for what I do have, not get angry about what I dont.”“I tell people to keep on getting up when they fall and to always love themselves,” he said. “If I can encourage just one person then my job in this life is done.” By now, he has visited 35 different countries, touring the world as a motivational speaker. 5What makes it possible for Nick to swim in the water?AHis small size. BHis small foot.CHis light weight. DHis big lungs. 根據(jù)第一段的第二句“Nick has a small foot on his left side, which helps him balance and enables him to kick”并結(jié)合第二段中的“my drumstick acts as a propeller (螺旋槳)”可知,Nick的小腳使其游泳成為可能,故選B項。6The underlined word “distraught” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_”Acoldblooded BbadtemperedCreally crazy Dextremely upset答案:D考查詞義猜測。根據(jù)第三段的第一句“When Nick was born, his father was so shocked he left the hospital room to vomit”可推知,Nick剛出生時的樣子嚇到了父母,當時Nick的母親應(yīng)該是很難過的,故選D項。7Nick abandoned the electronic arms and legs because_ _.Ahis family couldnt afford themBhis classmates didnt like themCthey were too heavy to handleDthey affected his appearance答案:C考查細節(jié)理解。根據(jù)第五段最后一句中的“and they turned out to be much too heavy for Nick to operate, affecting his flexibility quite significantly”可知,電動的胳膊和腿太沉了,使他的靈活性大受影響,因此在嘗試一段時間后,他不再使用它們了,故選C項。8Which of the following statements is true?ANicks parents were very strict with him.BNicks family accepted his disability at his birth.CNicks mother was to blame for his disability.DNick learned to be independent at a young age. 鼓勵1act as 充當;擔當2.try out 嘗試,試驗3turn out 結(jié)果是;證明是;生產(chǎn)原文:During the short trial period of the electronic arms and legs,., and they turned out to be much too heavy for Nick to operate, affecting his flexibility quite significantly. (too.to. Because of the serious illness, she was too_weak_ to_join_us_in the outing.
