They are the foundation of your ability to understand yourself and relate to others. When you are aware of your emotions, you can manage stress and municate well with others. Without emotions and awareness of them, its impossible to build or maintain strong, healthy relationships. The more aware you are of your own emotions, the easier it will be for you to pick up on what others are feeling and accurately read their wants and needs. Although emotional awareness is so important, many people remain relatively unaware of their main emotional experience. In order to know your level of emotional awareness, ask yourself the following questions. If you answer no, you may need to work on raising your emotional awareness — Can you tolerate strong feelings, such as anger and sadness? Do you feel your emotions in your body? Are you fortable with all of your emotions? Do you pay attention to your emotions and avoid them guiding your decisions? Raising your emotional awareness begins with managing stress. The ability to quickly reduce stress allows you to safely face strong emotions, regulate your feelings and behave properly. Also, the process of raising emotional awareness involves reconnecting with all of the main emotions, including anger, sadness, fear, disgust, surprise, and joy. So get back in touch with your emotions and feelings. Another key to raising emotional awareness is practice. Like building muscles in a gym, you wouldnt expect to be a bodybuilder after just five minutes. The more consistently you practice, the greater changes youll experience in what you feel, think, and do. We are all born with a capacity to freely experience the full range of human emotions — joy, anger, sadness, and fear. Yet many people are trying to avoid them rather than experience them. If you avoid emotions, you will lose the good ones, along with the bad ones. Either you feel your emotions or you dont. When you shut down negative feelings like anger, fear, or sadness, you also shut down your ability to experience positive feelings such as joy, love, and happiness. You can change or turn a blind eye to your emotions, but you cant get rid of them entirely. Moreover, it will totally wear you out, because avoiding emotional experiences usually takes a lot of energy. Whats more, it damages your relationships. The more you distance yourself from your feelings, the more distant you bee from others. You lose the ability to build strong relationships and municate effectively, both of which depend on being in touch with your emotions. For millions of years, the ancestors of humans evolved painfully slowly. However, about 150,000 years ago there was an explosive development in the human brain where, among other things, we gained the ability to examine our own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, as well as to see things from anothers point of view. Not only did this transformation create the foundation for art, spiritual practices and language, but it came with a survival advantage for our ancestors, who had to work together in order to survive. Though we may not face the same daytoday threats to our existence, selfawareness is no less critical. There is strong scientific evidence that people who know themselves and how others see them are happier. They are smarter, superior students. They raise more mature children. They also tend to be more creative, confident and less aggressive. But for most people it is easier to choose selfdelusion (自我欺瞞) rather than the cold hard truth. Our increasingly “me” focused society makes it easier to fall into this trap. Recent generations have grown up in a world obsessed with selfesteem (自負(fù)), constantly being reminded of their special qualities. Not only are our assessments often flawed (有缺陷), but we are usually terrible judges of our own performance and abilities — from leadership skills to achievements at school and work. Whats scary is that the least petent people are usually the most confident in their abilities. How can we avoid this fate? We must work on two specific types of insight. Internal selfawareness is an inward understanding of our passions and aspirations, strengths and weaknesses and so on. And external selfawareness, knowing how others see you, means understanding yourself from the outside in. It would be easy to assume that someone with internal selfawareness would also be externally aware — that being in touch with our feelings and emotions helps us tune into how were seen. Strangely, research has often shown no relationship between the two — some studies have even revealed an inverse (相反的) one. For those looking to gain true insight, remember that other people often see us more objectively than we see ourselves and that selfexamination can have hidden pitfalls (陷阱) that make insight actually impossible. 3.The first three paragraphs center around ________. A.the intelligence gap between modern men and their ancestors B.the sharp contrast between selfawareness of today and the past C.the necessity of a shift in selfawareness to satisfy the needs today D.the significance of selfawareness in human survival and advancement 解析:選D 段落大意題。 D。 4.Whats the problem with “me” focused society nowadays? A.Peoples performance and abilities are overlooked. B.Its difficult to obtain an objective assessment of ourselves. C.petent people tend to be unconfident of their leadership skills. D.Modern people fail to bring their special qualities into full play. 解析:選B 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第四段可知,現(xiàn)在社會(huì)的人們過于自負(fù),以自我為中心,很難得到對(duì)自己的能力的客觀評(píng)價(jià)。故選B。 5.What does the writer stress in this passage? A.Knowing how others see us is the key to success. B.Understanding ourselves inward contributes to a better fate. C.Selfexamination helps us gain true insight into ourselves. D.Internal selfawareness and external selfawareness are closely related. 解析:選A 主旨大意題。結(jié)合全文內(nèi)容尤其是最后一段可知,本文主要講的是正確認(rèn)知自我的關(guān)鍵在于知道他人是怎么評(píng)價(jià)自己的。所以選A。 C They are one of the best rugby teams in the world. The players of the All Blacks, New Zealands national rugby team, are strong, smart and fast. But, in fact, they win many of their games before the first whistle even blows. Before the game, during warmups, the All Blacks players gather in a semicircle. They stand with their captain in front of them and begin to dance. They hit their arms against their legs. They lift their feet into the air and slam them into the ground. They stick out their tongues and show the whites of their eyes. They shout ancient words and even scream. You may think theyre crazy. And that is just what they want you to think. The rugby players perform the haka, which is a traditional Maori (毛利人) dance. The Maoris are the native people of New Zealand and this dance has been used as a war dance since the 19th century.
