A Megan When I was younger, I spent all the money I got. After a couple of years, I began wondering why I didnt have any savings. Things had to change. It was then that I opened a bank account (賬戶). Even saving just a tiny amount each month can make quite a difference, so my advice would be for children like me to open an account and start saving. Jamie My advice is“be strict and know what youre spending”. I keep a budget (預算) so that I know exactly how much money I can spend on clothes, how much on going out with my friends and how much I need to save. I now work at the weekend, so I dont have to ask my parents for pocket money. Laura I always get pocket money from my parents. I would buy a coffee here or a sandwich there, and even though that only means two or three pounds a time, it soon increases in amount. One day I made a list of all the things Id bought that week and it really surprised me. Id spent 30 pounds on, well, nothing really! If I could give anyone advice, I would tell them to always ask themselves, “Do I really need this?” Olivia My dad lost his job recently, so my pocket money stopped. Now Im doing a part-time job on Tuesdays and Fridays. It isnt a lot, but it is enough. Not only have I become more responsible about money and how I spend it, but I feel good that Im working for it and not just relying on my parents. My advice to anyone is not to expect money to always be there and make sure you save enough for a rainy day. 1. According to the text, Megan _____. A. has always spent money wisely B. finds it hard to save any money C. puts some of her money in the bank D. doesnt have to worry about money 2. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to the money _____. A. Laura saved on food B. Laura spent on unimportant things C. Laura received from her parents D. Laura borrowed from her friends 3. Both Jamie and Olivia _____. A. have a part-time job B. get a lot of pocket money C. have opened a bank account D. spend a lot on clothes 4. The text is mainly about _____. A. making money B. borrowing money C. raising money D. managing money B EDMONTON, CANADA — The Etzio is one of the oldest buildings in one of the citys oldest neighbourhoods, but its set to be knocked down. Edmontonians are hoping more can be done to preserve (保留) more of the citys history. “The reason why the area is popular in the first place is that its a historic neighbourhood. And I think its important that we preserve that history,” said Mark Wilson, owner of Vivid Print, a shop on Whyte Avenue at 103 Street. Wilsons business is located in a building two doors down from the Etzio, a building that is more than a century old. But after 117 years on Whyte Avenue, the building is coming down to make way for a new three-floor development. “It has become acceptable to simply pull down old buildings and put up new buildings that look old,” said Wilson. “The words on the sidewalks here say historic area. Well, its not historic if all the buildings are 10 years old.” Its a move that disappoints Wilson and others on the street who believe more should be done to keep the character of Edmonton. “I think in this area its important because it keeps the flavor(特性)of Edmonton, and Edmonton is known for Whyte Ave.” said a woman on Saturday afternoon. “Some of the old culture should still be there, I think,” added a man who was walking along the street. “It makes Edmonton unique (獨一無二的). Without it, it just becomes another mall or it could be any other city in the world.” Wilson — looking fondly at the old building — believes a little piece of history is lost with every building thats torn down. After the Etzio building is torn down, the Old Strathcona Hotel and the Ross building will be the only two buildings left from the 1800s. 5. Why does Wilson consider the Etzio important? A. It helps him develop his business. B. His neighbours live there. C. Its a symbol of history. D. His shop is inside it. 6. In Wilsons eyes, what will be done to the city is _____. A. acceptable B. popular C. unpleasant D. strange 7. What can be the best title for the text? A. 117-year-old building to be torn down B. New development being met with disagreements C. Edmonton business owner makes a move D. Old buildings in Edmonton face an uncertain future C Bryan Laubscher, one of the worlds leading astrophysicists, who study the physics and chemistry of the stars, planets, etc, is developing an invention called the Mars Elevator. To form a picture of this, you may want to imagine the story of Jack and the Beanstalk (《杰克與魔豆》). This is the story of a boy who grew a beanstalk that reached the heavens. Jack climbed the stalk and entered another world. The space elevator is similar but of course much more high-tech and better yet, it is real! Astrophysicists are designing a steel-like cable (纜繩) that will be connected to a platform (平臺) in the ocean. This cable is designed to be pulled up into space, where it will then be connected to a space station. People will be able to travel up and down this elevator by the year 2020. There will be a number of space elevators so that both tourists and businesses can travel into space. To get there, space tourists will simply travel to the nearest ocean elevator entrance. The trip up into space will take about a week. When they arrive, space tourists will be inside a space station and will be able to stay there. There are other alternatives, too. Astronomers think it will be easy to travel from the space station to the moon, where space tourists can stay in a moon hotel — which is now being designed. The future looks bright for space tourists. It also looks bright for industry and scientists. Mining companies will travel to space to mine elements (元素) that are rare on Earth. Energy scientists will travel to space to set up space solar panels, which will collect a huge amount of energy from the sun and shoot it back to Earth where we can use it to heat our homes and meet our energy needs. 8. What does Jack and the Beanstalk help readers understand? A. The difficulty of building space elevators. B. What material space elevators would use. C. What space elevators would look like. D. The reason for inventing space elevators. 9. What can we infer about space elevators? A. Theyre accepting pre-paid bookings. B. Theyll be available in the near future. C. Theyre mainly used for scientific study. D. Theyll offer people a seven-day round trip. 10. What does the underlined word “alternatives” (in Para. 2) mean? A. Advantages. B. Purposes. C. Entries. D. Choices. 11. What is the authors attitude towards space elevators? A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Positive. D Edmund Halley, an astronomer in the late 1600s, was very interested in comets (彗星). In 1682, he noticed a comet that was especially bright and large. He spent a long time studying it. Then it disappeared from view. Based on his research, Halley guessed that this bright comet would return in 1758 or 1759. This was about 75 years after he first saw the comet. This same bright comet returned right on time. However, Halley died in 1742 and was unable to see it. Not long after that, the comet was named “Halley’s comet” in his honor. Scientists who had been following Halley’s work began to look back through history. They learned that for centuries there had been mention of a comet in the sky about every 75 years, going all the way back to 467 B.C. Often, the return of Halley’s comet seemed to coincide (同時發(fā)生) with important events in history. For many years people believed that Halley’s comet caused catastrophes (大災難), from sickness to war. Now, scientists know that comets do not cause bad events, and they have learned more about comets. All comets are made of a head and a tail. Some comets have longer tails. The head is made mostly of ice, plus some dust and pieces of rock. U.S. astronomer Fred Whipple used the phrase “dirty snowballs” to describe comets. Comets move through the sky very quickly. However, their speed depends on how close they are to the Sun. When Halley’s comet is farthest from the Sun, it moves about 2,040 miles per hour. When it is closest to the Sun, it moves at an amazing 122,000 miles per hour! People today remain attracted by this comet. The most recent visit from Halley’s comet was in 1985-1986. This time, two spacecraft, Vega 1 and Vega 2, got a close look at the comet as it raced around the Sun. Halley’s comet should next return in 2061. Who knows what high-tech equipment will be around to study it then? 12. From the first paragraph, we can learn that _____. A. Halley saw the same comet twice in his life B. Halley had known a lot about comets before 1682 C. Halley named the comet he found “Halley’s comet” D. Halley’s guess about the comet’s return proved correct 13. In ancient times, people often considered Halley’s comet _____. A. a star bringing bad luck B. a star worth seeing C. a star with a high temperature D. a star visiting the Earth once in a lifetime 14. The third paragraph mainly tells us _____. A. what comets are like B. where comets can be seen C. why comets fly at high speeds D. how long it takes comets to circle around the Sun 15. The question in the last paragraph mainly shows _____. A. high-tech equipment is needed to study Halley’s comet B. research on Halley’s comet will never be over C. people expect to see the return of Halley’s comet more often D. people are ready for the return of Halley’s comet in 2061 第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題3分,滿分15 分) 根據短文內容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。 How to teach kids about computers Teaching kids about computers can prepare them for using modern technology. As we know, computers provide a wide choice of entertainment. 16 Just as with anyone who is new to computers, you should start with teaching kids basic computer skills. 17 Kids should be told that food and drink must be kept away from computers at all times, and devices (設備) like keyboards and mouses should be handled (操作) gently. This can help prevent kids from causing any accidents that may damage computers. Show kids how to hold and use a computer mouse. Since most computers are driven by commands from a mouse, teaching kids how to use a mouse is the first step in learning about computers. 18 It can help kids become familiar with the use of a mouse quickly. Teach kids about typing on a keyboard. 19 Use typing software that teaches kids about proper hand and finger placement on a keyboard, and that contains a series of lessons that progress as kids develop their typing skills. 20 Show kids how to enter key words into search engines such as Baidu, Google or Yahoo. For example, if a kid is going to learn something about the universe, show them how to enter key words into a search engine, such as “the earth”, “the moon” or “star”. And show kids how to choose websites that can provide correct information on a certain topic, such as websites that end in either “.edu” or “.org”. A. Teach kids how to take care of computers. B. Teach kids how to make use of the Internet. C. Of course, computers can be used to help kids learn new things as well. D. Kids should be taught to put their hands properly over a keyboard to type. E. If your mouse and keyboard aren’t working for you, it’s time to buy new ones. F. Change the mouse settings on your computer to achieve a slower mouse speed. G.
