It has also made Ma Chinas richest man with a fortune of around $25 billion (153 billion yuan),reported Reuters. Its reported that Mas rags-to-riches journey is just as spectacular (驚人的) as his Internet empire (帝國(guó)). Ma failed the national college entrance exams twice before he was finally in Hangzhou Normal University on his third attempt and failed in finding a suitable job several times. Also, Mr. Ma is a big believer in perseverance (毅力),which was proved in his English study experience. However,it was his vision and goals that launched his career. During a short trip to the US as an interpreter (口譯) in 1995,Ma first experienced the Internet. He believed in the Internets business potential (潛力) when few other Chinese people did. He started Alibaba in his Hangzhou apartment, with 17 friends and $60,000 of funds. At the time, when e-commerce (電子商務(wù)) was unheard of in China, “I called myself a blind man riding on the back of blind tigers,” he once said, according to The Guardian. His unusual ideas earned him the nickname “Crazy Jack Ma”. Indeed,Ma is different. Although he is very thin and about 160cm tall,“Ma is yet animated and forceful, ” said The Guardian. He is funny, creative, and a compelling (引人注目的) speaker. Ma told Time magazine that he was “old for the Internet”.He started to slow down and looked around. When put to a test, we are willing to go an extra mile for our friends. In an experiment, people were asked to squat (深蹲) against a wall, which became increasingly painful with time. They were told to keep squatting for as long as they could, and paid 1 dollar for every second. People performed the exercise five times, once for themselves and four times for their friends or partners. The result paints a more selfless picture of society than we might expect these days. Of the 17 people, ten squatted longer for their friends or partners. Some people squatted twice as long for their closest friends as for themselves. Dr Freya Harrison said, "I think that if our results stand in general and people really do go the extra mile for close friends, it points to the importance of cooperation in our species. It suggests that keeping social relationships and working together have been important roles in the success of humans as a species." A study found people were unwilling to squat any longer for their brothers or sisters than for themselves. "Maybe thats because friends are a lot more important in deciding social benefits than brothers and sisters," Dr Harrison said. Perhaps we can depend on help from parents or brothers and sisters because people almost have no reason for helping someone who has the same genes (基因) as them. It seems that the role of a brother or a sister doesnt need working on, because family members have genes in common already. 5. What can we learn from the passage? A. It isnt hard for people to squat for a long time. B. People don t like to take part in this kind of experiment. C. The result of the experiment is better than expected. D. In order to get money, people squat as long as possible for themselves. 6. From the experiment, we can know . Follow these tips to make sure you and your roommate keep things pleasant and supportive throughout the year. Be clear from the beginning. Maybe you hate it when someone interrupts you when you are sleeping every morning. Maybe you need ten minutes to yourself before talking to anyone after you wake up. 10 It’s not fair to expect him or her to notice them right away, and communicating what you need is one of the best ways to get rid of problems before they become problems. 11 This may seem simple, but it’s probably one of the biggest reasons why roommates experience conflicts. Don’t you think he’ll mind if you borrow his shoes for a quick soccer game? For all you know, you just stepped over an uncrossable line. Don’t borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first. Be open to change. You should expect to learn and grow and change during your time at school. 12 As the term progresses, realize things will change for both of you. Be comfortable addressing(處理) things that unexpectedly come up, setting new rules, and being flexible(靈活的) to your changing environment. Follow the Golden Rule. 13 No matter what your relationship is at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted like an adult and treated your roommate with respect. A. Respect your roommate’s things. B. You should correct your bad habits first. C. Having a roommate surely has its challenges. D. Let your roommate know about your preferences. E. Treat your roommate like you’d like to be treated. F. Living with a roommate is really a wonderful thing. G.
