Both towns have many hotels, and in summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists. Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day, this news appeared on page two of the town's newspaper—The Beldon Post: FIRE AT SEABREEZE Late last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our visitors: “Please don't smoke cigarettes in bed.”This was Beldon's first hotel fire for five years. The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one: ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRE Last night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said,“An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I put my bedside light on, I heard a funny noise from the lamp.”We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield. What are the facts, then? It is never easy to find out the exact truth about an accident. There was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel last August; that is one fact. Do we know anything else? Yes, we know that firemen went to the hotel. Now what do you think of the rest of the“news”? 1.Which of the following best gives the main idea of this text? A.Beldon and Canfield are both good places for tourists in summer. B.A fire broke out at night in Seabreeze Hotel last summer. C.It was not easy to find out exact truth from newspapers. D.Two newspapers gave reports on the same matter. 從主題句“It is never easy to find out the exact truth about an accident.” 2.Which of the following are probably facts? a.The fire broke out in a bedroom at the hotel. b.A cigarette started the fire. c.An old lamp started the fire. d.The fire broke out at night. e.There has never been a fire in Canfield. A.b and c B.a and d C.c and e D.a and c 答案:B 細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)“Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel”及兩家報紙都報道了火災是在晚上發(fā)生的,故可以確定的事實只有兩項:a和d。 B。 3.The Canfield Times used the headline like this in order to make its readers think________. A.hotels in Beldon often catch fire B.hotels in Beldon don't often catch fire C.this was the second fire at the Seabreeze Hotel D.Beldon was a good place except that hotels there are not quite safe 答案:A 推理判斷題。ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CA- TCHES FIRE中ANOTHER是個關鍵詞,它暗示Beldon的賓館頻繁發(fā)生火災。 4.The Canfield newspaper gave a report just the opposite to The Beldon Post by saying that________. A.the bedroom lamps were very old at the Seabreeze Hotel B.the bedroom lights made funny noise when the fire took place C.the firemen failed to save clothing, bedclothes and other things D.such accidents never happened in Canfield for the past 5 years 答案:C 細節(jié)理解題。The Canfield Times報道說“Last night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel.”,而The Beldon Post則說消防隊員及時把這場小火撲滅了(沒有造成損失)。 B School Report went international when the BBC News project's first global radio bulletin was made at Randfontein High School near Johannesburg in South Africa. Students from the school were joined by pupils from two other schools—Parktown High School for Girls and Impala Crescent Primary School—and went live at 14:00 local time on 3 February 2009. BBC Producers Ros Smith and Kate Riley were invited by the Commonwealth of Learning to work with the schools. After deciding on their news items, the students gathered vox_pops from fellow students and their teachers. Tiffany said,“We had a chance to talk to other kids from other schools. This was great because Randfontein is situated in the sticks, away from civilisation.” Nomakhosi added, “Interviewing our teachers and classmates was interesting and I felt important while doing this.” Chene commented, “My voice sounded like a whole new person. It takes some time getting used to hearing your own voice.” Pupils, known as learners in South Africa, then worked with School Report producer Ros Smith to edit their clips while others started script-writing(寫廣播稿). With the 1,400 deadline fast approaching, and the audio edited, the new School Reporters recorded their scripts so they could be added to the bulletin. Ros Smith was really impressed with the students' work. She said, “The stories they chose were an excellent mix. The final bulletin sounds really good, and they finished with 10 minutes to spare before the deadline.” On 26 March students from the three schools will take part in the School Report News Day with support from the Open Learning Systems Education Trust, and it was a big success. 5.BBC School Report started its first worldwide radio bulletin in________. A. news about pop stars B. skills of writing news C. voices from the public D. suggestions on how to start an interview 答案:C 詞義猜測題。 Interviewing our teachers and classmates可以推知,此處是說學生們采訪身邊的人,來獲取“公眾的聲音”。 7.Which of the following is TRUE about Randfontein? A. It is a big city in South Africa. B. It is a small and underdeveloped place. C. It established the School Report News Day. D. It invited Ros Smith and Kate Riley to a celebration. 8.The students do the following jobs by themselves EXCEPT ______. A. To give advice on making radio bulletins. B. To introduce BBC School Report's first global radio bulletin. C. To show students' interest in making news in South Africa. D. To call on people to pay more attention to South African schools.
