2019-2020年高一英語 Unit 7 Cultural relics 1 Ⅰ.Teaching Goals: 1.Talk about cultural relics. 2.Talk about ways to protect cultural relics. 3.Give advice and make suggestions. 4.Use the Present Perfect Passive Voice. 5.Write a letter to the editor. Ⅱ.Teaching Time:Four periods Ⅲ.Background Information Ⅰ.Leaning Tower of Pisa Repaired Late last year, engineers celebrated(慶祝) the pletion of repairs to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.Italian officials closed the Leaning Tower for safety reasons more than a decade ago.Experts now say the repairs will make the building safe for at least a few more centuries. The Leaning Tower is famous around the world. Many visitors to Italy travel to the city of Pisa to see the unusual-looking structure. The round tower is more than eight-hundred years old. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is easy to recognize. The white stone building is sinking(沉陷),or leaning,on one side. The tower is about fifty-five meters high. Its south side is much lower than its north side. The Leaning Tower is leaning because it was built on soft sandy soil. The soil cannot support its weight. The tower weighs about fourteen-thousand-five-hundred metric tons. The ground under the tower first started to sink soon after workers began building the structure in the year 1173. In recent years, the Leaning Tower has continued to sink.Experts expressed concern that the tower might fall suddenly. In 1989,a similar tower in the Italian city of Pavia fell.Four people were killed. The following year,Italian officials closed the Leaning Tower of Pisa.People were no longer permitted to walk up to the top. An international team of building experts began a project to make sure the Leaning Tower does not fall down. The project cost about twenty-five million dollars. First, engineers placed eight-hundred-seventy metric tons of lead(鉛) weights on the north side of the tower. This helped stop additional movement. Also, workers tide strong steelcables(鋼索) around the structure. These wires were connected to large weights in the area. Next, engineers slowly removed(移動(dòng)) tons of soil from under the tower. They used special drills(鉆孔機(jī)) to remove small amounts of soil over several months. Slowly the tower moved back to where it stood hundreds of years ago.It still leans, but not as much as before the repairs. Recently the area around the Leaning Tower opened to the public again, though only about thirty visitors are permitted to climb the tower at one time. Ⅱ.Abu Simbel Abu Simbel is the site of temples built by the Egyptian King Ramses Ⅱ.The four large figures of Ramses in front of the main temple can be regarded as one of the most spectacular example of ancient Egyptian art. Carved out of a sandstone cliff on the west bank of the Nile, south of Korosko, near the Sudanese frontier, the temples were unknown to the outside world until their rediscovery in 1813.They were first explored in 1817. The 20 metre seated figures of Ramses were set against the recessed face of the cliff, two on either side of the entrance to the main temple.Carved around their feet were small figures representing Ramses’ queen and their children. The temple itself, dedicated to the sun god, consisted of three halls extending 185 feet into the cliff with more figures of the King and with painted reliefs showing his life and achievements. Between 1964 and 1966 a work force and an international team of engineers and scientists, supported by funds from more than 50 countries, dug away the top of the cliff and pletely disassembled the temples, reconstructing them on high ground 200 feet above the riverbed. Ⅲ.Protecting the Sphinx The most famous statue — the Sphinx in Egypt has been damaged. The experts are going to find out the cause to protect it. The Sphinx has the body of a lion and the face of a man.It was cut from linestone near Egypt pyramid about 1 600 years ago.Not long before a large piece of stone fell from the Sphinx’ right shoulder. To protect the statue from more harm,a puter was placed on it to measure rainfall, wind speed and air temperature. The puter also measure the amount of water and air pollution, the direction of wind and the temperature of the statue itself. The effects of age, wind, water and pollution have greatly weakened the Sphnix.Sunlight, wind, water and pollution have been eroding the outside of the stature for centuries. The experts hope that the information from the puter will help it from more damage. They say the more they know about what is destroying the Sphnix, the more they can do to protect it.
